Staying Organized During a Move
Relocating brings a lot of excitement and stress into one’s life. There is the thrill of living in a new place, even if it is only a few blocks from your old residence, but that is accompanied by the headache of moving logistics. Staying organized during a move is one of the greatest challenges people face when they relocate. If you’re worried about how you’re going to keep your head on straight while in the middle of a move, these tips might be for you.
What Stays and What Goes?
It is much easier to move when you have less stuff. That should be obvious but a lot of people end up moving junk from their attic that they haven’t used, let alone thought about, in 10 years. Moving is the perfect opportunity to take a trip to the city dump with garbage or Salvation Army with donations.
Develop a Label System
When you’re packing boxes, it can be hard to keep each box’s destination straight. Is that box destined for the kitchen or bathroom or attic? By taping large pieces of different colored paper onto each box and taping corresponding colored papers to the doors of the new house’s rooms, you can keep everything straight. Green is the master bedroom, red is the kitchen and blue is the living room. Whatever system you develop, make sure the movers are all in on the fun.
Get a Moving Mate
This isn’t encouraging you to shack up with someone just to give you an ally in the moving process. The Moving Mate refers to a folder or notebook you keep that records and contains all the important moving information you need. Too often I’ve talked to people who realized that they packed some important document that the movers or the bank needs. You can avoid this headache by setting up a Moving Mate that goes with you everywhere and contains all the business cards, documents and important dates for your big move. Having everything contained in one spot that will not get packed up will be a huge help.
